Darkness settles over the Pokémon Trading Card Game with the release of Pitch Black, a Mega Evolution era expansion delivering 120 cards, with 84 before secret rares. The set builds its identity around Mega Evolution at its most menacing — Mega Zeraora ex, Mega Chandelure ex, Mega Excadrill ex and, presiding over all of them, Mega Darkrai ex — supported by Lurantis ex, Wailord ex, Rampardos ex and Morpeko ex. A refreshed Trainer line-up brings Gwynn, Iron Defender, Misty's Vitality, Gladion's Final Battle and the Rust Syndicate Grunt into play.

Celebrated for its shadow-drenched artwork, Pitch Black's secret rare run opens with eleven illustration rares, climbs through eighteen ultra rares and six special illustration rares, then narrows to a single Mega Hyper Rare: Mega Darkrai ex at 120/084 — the only card in the set at that tier and its undisputed chase. Appearing three times across the secret rares, each treatment more elaborate than the last, Mega Darkrai ex gives the expansion both its name and its centre of gravity.
